Master Gardeners of the Ozarks

Extension Volunteers serving Stone & Taney Counties

Featured Projects

At the heart of our purpose are our projects: community involvement, horticultural education and charitable work.

We are active managing demonstration gardens like the Core of Engineers Project Office (the former Dewey Short Visitors Center) at Table Rock Lake, the Children’s Garden at the Kimberling Area Library, Taney County Extension Office in Forsyth or the Public Library in Galena.  We man vendor booths at fairs and festivals. We help students to become knowledgeable horticulturalists.

Bonniebrook

Bonniebrook is the location of the Rose O’Neill Home and Museum which offers lovely, landscaped lawns and beds, a faithful recreation of Rose O’Neill’s Ozark home and a museum featuring her Kewpie dolls and other art treasures.

KAL Children’s Garden

kimberling city library childrens garden 006The Mission of the KAL Garden is to provide a garden environment in which plant based and reading activities generate interest and appreciation of reading and horticulture that lead to a lifelong pursuit of these beneficial activities.

The KAL Children’s Garden was started in 2008 based on an idea of MG Alice Troyke and as a two year college project for MG Julie Jacob. Julie designed the garden and created the text for the interactive signs as part of her Horticultural Therapist training at Colorado State University.

The garden is anchored by a large bed in the shape of a butterfly filled with beautiful annuals and perennials. The body of the butterfly contains the ABC garden. There is a plant for each letter of the alphabet. Also, within the Children’s Garden can be found the Arbor Garden, the Rock & Roll Garden and the Rest & Read Shade Garden. These gardens are maintained by Master Gardener voluneers as an educational resource for the community and especially children. They are used to educate the children as part of the KAL Story Hour. The garden is also maintained as a demonstration area in conjunction with the series of gardening classes offered by Master Gardeners at the Kimberling Area Library.

The garden has flourished because of the dedicated Master Gardeners who work on this project in all types of weather. During the growing season you will find them out there the first and third Wednesday mornings of the month. We are always looking for Master Gardeners to help us out with this fun project. Please contact this year’s project leader, Joanne Anderson, if you would like to help with this wonderful project.

Core of Engineers Project Office

The gardens at the Core of Engineers Project Office (the building which housed the old Dewey Short Visitor Center) just south of Table Rock Dam are completely maintained by the Master Gardeners of the Ozarks – Core of Engineers Project Office Garden Beds Committee. Funding is provided by the Army Corps of Engineers, who manage the center, the dam and the lake.

Kimberling Area Senior Center

Our group maintains several beds and borders at this facility.

Speakers Bureau

As one of the educational activities of the Master Gardeners of the Ozarks, the speakers bureau is an effort to provide educational activities to the community.  Master Gardeners sign up for various presentations that they are knowledgeable in and willing to share with others.

Taney County Extension Office

We maintain landscaping and demonstration gardens at the Taney County Extension Office in Forsyth, county seat of Taney County.
